A German lawyer, he was one of Hitler's intimates. As Minister of Justice, he played a major role in formulating the Nuremberg laws. A decree dated October 12th, 1939, and signed by Hitler, named him head of the Generalgouvernment, the administrative unit covering the central districts of occupied Poland. He lived in Cracow. Frank was one of the main defendants at the Nuremberg Trial where the International Military Court sentenced him to death by hanging. His diary is among the most important documents of the Nazi Policy in Occupied Europe.
